Hip Hop for Teachers of Language Arts
Hip Hop for Teachers of Language Arts
Hip Hop for of Language Arts (3 hour seminar)
Teachers, gear up for a whole new set of tools in your pocket! Local Portland hip hop artist Mic Crenshaw and Our Turn facilitator Aviva will offer strategies for teaching that have helped us connect our students to learning and to understanding themselves.
We will begin with a review of different modes of Hip Hop as a form of self-expression for all students, looking specifically at data for historically underserved teens in the Portland Metro area. Mic will share his expertise in engaging students with personal storytelling, leading into understanding of universal features of African music.
From this starting point, we will collectively create our own writing as a mode for classroom practice using the Writers Workshop model, creating a 16 bar piece using 4:4 time. Teachers will also discuss how the power of cultural capital can transform learning spaces. We will draw upon resources based in trauma-informed care, state and district LA standards, and Hip-Hop based pedagogy. We will also touch upon the importance of Hip Hop in the international community of youth and share with you how our collaboration has fostered learning abroad.
