United African Alliance Community Center

The children's home was created in 2008 to help improve the lives of disadvantaged children within the community. We do not use the term orphans as they are our family, and we are their family. We have 20 children and we provide housing, education, healthcare, and a loving extended family environment. We put a great emphasis on learning and in addition to attending school the children have private tutoring on a daily basis. We are well aware that "all work and no play makes Jack (or Jill) a dull person" so we include exciting and fun field trips designed to broaden the children's perspectives and allow them to appreciate the grandeur of their country and the world! We are very serious when we say  "Leaders of Tomorrow" and it is our hope and aim to help these young people develop to the point where national leadership roles are within the realm of their possibilities!

BEAM Village

The Black Educational Achievement Movement (BEAM) operates as a “Sankofa Village” model. Where a collective of Black educational service providers and Black professionals in both the public and private sectors are committed to reaching back to help our youth, by challenging the insistent disregard of the hopes, dreams and achievements of Black students in the public and private classrooms. Hence, BEAM unites an intergenerational cross section of culturally-proficient community-based organizations that have bridged their years of expertise to elevate and acknowledge youth of African descent who are in pursuit of middle school, high school and post-secondary educational attainment that will prepare them for the globe marketplace.

YAE Camp

YAE! [Young Artists Empowerment] Camp is a program run by WolfBird Dance and supported in collaboration by Portland Street Art Alliance, and Graffiti Camp for Girls: all three organizations are female-directed nonprofit organizations. YAE! Camp is a 2-week, 10 day immersive experience designed to build confidence and empowerment for female identifying youth inside of typically male dominated Artistic spaces. YAE! provides mentorship for female/femme/non-binary youth ages 12-17. Participants who come from diverse, historically marginalized communities, and under-served low-income homes in Portland are given top priority in our scholarship program. Our students come from all different levels of technique and experience in Visual Art and Dance. By the end of our program, campers will have completed a large scale mural on a city wall that remains on display year round. They also showcase a dance they’ve helped choreograph and participate in a freestyle/cypher/jam session with local female dance Artists.

Activate Studio

Activate Studio started off in 2017 as Activate Day Camp, an arts-focused summer day camp in in the NW Heights neighborhood. It was a side gig for a PPS 3rd grade teacher, Greg Brown. Greg started the camp with the goal of keeping children’s minds and bodies activated throughout the summer with creativity, physical activity, and lots of fun. In the Summer of 2019, he moved Activate Studio to a larger storefront space in the Sellwood/ Moreland neighborhood. He resigned from his teaching job, and he is now offering after-school enrichment courses, tutoring, full-day camps during teacher inservice days, and week-long camps during breaks. He also hosts many Our Turn workshops for teachers.
